RE-TUNING THE GOANNA
2012-2013

Before television, families relied on the old ‘goanna’ as a centrepiece for the night’s activities...

As time and technology marches on, the old piano has become neglected and forgotten.

Yet, Noel Brady celebrates this decline through finely-crafted sculptures and high-relief panels that re-work found materials, in particular the piano.

By re-combining the individual repeated parts of a piano with other found objects, Brady constructs sinuous wooden collages that burst with energy and fluidity.

Re-tuning the Goanna also features a selection of instrument-inspired wooden carvings – glowing curves of precious woods combine with rustic materials – weathered fence palings, rusty nails and scrap metal.
